Anyone who is looking to make an impact in their community can support survivors of violent crime by volunteering with SARC to provide medical accompaniments during times of crisis. Sexual Assault Response Advocates, or SARAs, provide compassionate, confidential support to survivors of all forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Our advocates accompany survivors to medical services, offering emotional support, crisis intervention, and advocacy to ensure their needs, choices, and voices remain at the center of care.
During a SARAs chosen on-call shift, they are responsible for responding immediately to local hospital Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) units to support survivors through forensic medical exams, answer questions, and provide resources. SARAs work with hospital staff, police officers, and the patient to develop a plan for shelter, transportation, and safety.
All advocates will be asked to complete an application and interview. Volunteers do not need prior experience; training will be provided, and they will be supported on accompaniments by a 24/7 supervisor on call.
