Volunteer: Serve Fellow Vets on Hospice (Sussex County)

ChristianaCare in Collobration with AccentCare Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers who are active or retired United States military to help brighten the lives of our veteran patients. Whether you are assisting with a veteran pinning ceremony, attending veteran-centered events our team organizes, or directly visiting veteran patients for companionship, YOU can make a difference in the lives of hospice patients. While you are brightening your fellow veterans’ lives you might find that your life becomes brighter too!

ChristianaCare in Collobration with AccentCare Hospice, formerly Seasons Hospice, serves patients and families in your area. We are currently seeking new veteran volunteers to provide a wide variety of services to our patients and their loved ones. Our vet-to-vet volunteers visit patients wherever they call home to provide companionship and socialization. They may assist with legacy projects to honor the patients’ life or sit vigil and provide a supportive presence at the bedside of patients who are actively dying. Veteran volunteers also help our team honor veterans through pinning ceremonies and events in the community. These are just a few of the ways veteran volunteers in our organization support our patients, families, and staff.

Even if you only have a few hours a month to give, we would be honored to have you join our team and support our mission of offering compassionate, personalized hospice care. Training is free and flexible to fit your schedule and you can choose what area you want to serve.

We look forward to hearing from you and helping you find ways to use your experience as a veteran to honor and support fellow veterans at the end of life

Volunteer: Sexual Assault Helpline Advocate (Statewide)

SARC’s helpline advocates provide compassionate, confidential support to survivors of all forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Volunteers will provide crisis intervention, support, and resource referrals to callers and clients and conduct safety, suicide risk, and lethality assessments when appropriate. These advocates serve as a critical bridge between immediate crisis response and long-term healing. Through advocacy, connection, and care, volunteers help survivors access resources both within SARC and throughout the broader community, providing support at each step on their journey toward safety and healing.

During a volunteer’s chosen on-call shift, they are responsible for responding to any helpline calls, which will be routed to their personal cell phone. Helpline advocates volunteer remotely but are expected to be in a quiet area when answering calls.

All advocates will be asked to complete an application and interview. Volunteers do not need prior experience but are required to participate in initial training and advanced workshops. They are expected to communicate with the on-call Supervisor during their shifts and complete accurate reports in a timely manner.

Volunteer: Habitat Restoration - Fridays and Saturdays!

Did you know that invasive plants grow aggressively, stealing the sunlight from our native plants and nutrients in the soil?

Invasive plants disrupt local ecosystems because they lack natural predators and grow aggressively. They outcompete native flora for critical resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. This unchecked spread chokes out native plants, which in turn starves the local insects and wildlife that rely on them for food.

We have groups that meet on Fridays and Saturdays to work two hours to remove the invasive plants.  You do not need any experience.  Come help our habitat and our wildlife while meeting new people!

Volunteer: Come help the Butterflies!!

Come Help the Butterflies!!

This is the time of the year that Monarch Butterflies lay eggs on milkweed and then those eggs turn into larvae and eventually become butterflies!  It is necessary for their survival that this process is monitored and documented. We ask that you plan to monitor once per week at the designated milk weed beds, ideally on the same day each week.

If you're unable to go out on your usual day, please try to monitor within 24 hours of that day.  This monitoring takes place May through September.

We provide an orientation so no experience is necessary!  Training will be June 8th at 4:30 p.m. at the Josephine Fountain across from the Brandywine Zoo.  Parking is available.

This orientation starts next week and takes about an hour.  You will be given days/times to choose from. Why are Monarch Butterflies so important? Monarch butterflies are vital ecological components that act as key pollinators for wildflowers, support biodiversity, and serve as a crucial food source for various predators. As a "flagship" or indicator species, their population decline highlights broader environmental issues, including habitat loss and pesticide overuse. They are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and, as part of the pollinator community, help support the food web. You will be given instructions on how to monitor and record your data.

For more information about the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, visit: https://mlmp.org

We will be shoveling this sand off of the boardwalk and moving it back onto the beach so that visitors can easily access and enjoy the beautiful coast!

What to Expect:
We provide all necessary supplies, including gloves, shovels, and a wheelbarrow. Expect to walk over a variety of surfaces including paved paths and sand. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.

Meeting Location:
South Inlet Day-Use Area parking lot. Park near the Big Chill and look for a state vehicle and park staff member to assist with check-in.

Google Maps Link
Address: 39415 S Inlet Rd, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971

Park Entry:
A parking pass will be provided by volunteer staff before the day of the sand clearing. Let the fee booth attendant know you're attending a volunteer project and show your parking pass if needed.

Weather Policy:
This event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. Please check your email (and spam folder) prior to leaving for any updates.

Additional Notes:

Parental supervision is required for all volunteers under 18.

Thank you for giving back to your park! We appreciate your help!

Volunteer: Brandywine Ivy Removal

Help us save the trees from being strangled by English Ivy Vines in Brandywine Park!

Many of our trees are in danger of being harmed or killed by the invasive English Ivy which is pretty to look at but deadly.  The vines climb up the trees blocking out the sun, susceptible to breaking branches, serious diseases and even death.  Removing these vines (you cut from the bottom of the tree) helps control the spread of invasive plants throughout the park and in surrounding neighborhoods.

During the fall and winter months, we meet every Saturday 10 a.m-12 p.m.  Get on our mailing list so you know when and where to meet.  Email plantladylucy@gmail.com

IMPORTANT: if you plan on volunteering, email volunteer lead Lucy first, as the location of this event changes every time.  Email plantladylucy@gmail.com

You will need to wear long sleeved shifts and long pants, along with closed-toed shoes as you will be in the woods where there is poison ivy.  Everything will be identified to you and no experience is necessary.

Individuals and corporate groups are welcome.  Parent consent form required for children under 18.  Parent or Guardian supervision required for children under 16.

Volunteer: Nanticoke Creekwatcher: Bridgeville

Nanticoke Watershed Alliance seeks one or two new Creekwatcher volunteers to adopt a pair of sites in the Bridgeville area. Both sites are bridge sites and are best monitored on Sunday mornings but may be monitored any time on Sundays or by noon on Mondays.

The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance’s Creekwatchers Program began in July 2007 as a multi-year, bi-state project to monitor the health of the Nanticoke River. Data collected by Creekwatchers allow the NWA to identify sources of impairment such as nutrient or sediment pollution, to spot occurring trends, and to provide high-quality data to partner agencies.  Creekwatchers monitor over 30 sites throughout the Nanticoke River watershed.

Creekwatchers collect samples and monitor the water quality of the Nanticoke River or one of its major tributaries at prearranged and designated sites. Creekwatchers commit to monitoring their site(s) for the full duration of the monitoring season and should be prepared to sample at least 14 out of 17 sampling periods.  Responsibilities include:

Participating in orientation and training and learning how to use water monitoring equipment.Monitoring one or more sites every other week on Sunday or Monday from late March to early November.Dropping off samples and datasheets at pre-arranged points.Maintaining and storing one’s own water monitoring kit for the duration of the season and returning it to the NWA in good condition at the end of the season.Communicating with NWA staff and with fellow Creekwatchers.

Training and Benefits: NWA staff provide in-depth training that readies Creekwatchers to operate water monitoring equipment and to understand what we measure and why.  Creekwatchers are provided with an in-depth handbook outlining the procedures for water monitoring at each site, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, and information about measurements taken. Training videos are also available on our YouTube channel. NWA staff will also work with new Creekwatchers at their sites during their first sampling period and will be available for questions and assistance throughout the season. Benefits include:

Taking ownership of one or more sites and protecting your local waterways.Having results used by the scientific and academic community and seeing those results in reports such as the NWA’s annual Nanticoke River Report Card.Learning how to use scientific equipment.Participating in paddles, dinners, and field trips that take place a few times during the year.Meeting new, like-minded people, getting out on the water, and having fun.

Qualifications: No education or prior background in water monitoring is required. To become a Creekwatcher, volunteers must have an ability and willingness to learn new equipment, have the time to commit to spending at least an hour every other week (on Sundays or Mondays) monitoring and delivering samples and datasheets, have a reliable mode of transportation, and have the confidence and responsibility to monitor independently without regular onsite supervision.

Please reach out to BethWasden@NanticokeRiver.org or at 443.944.1175 if interested in this opportunity.
