Cultivate an appreciation of Trap Pond as a great natural resource for all ages.

Become a Friends of Killens Pond Member!

The Friends of Killens Pond mission is to enjoy and protect the land within Killens Pond State Park, its management areas, and to actively participate in the Park's preservation and improvement. 

The Friends of Killens Pond group helps fund the summer concert series, children's summer camp scholarships, stipends for Title I school field trips, and other needs for the park. Members work on trails twice a month and maintain the garden beds throughout the park. The members also run annual activities/events, like Scarecrow making and as of 2026 the Killens Pond Festival!

If you are interested in learning more or becoming a Friends of Killens Pond member, they welcome anyone to attend one of their monthly meetings; the 2nd Tuesday of every month starting at 6:30pm in the Nature Center.

This volunteer role is vital in helping keep the line(s) moving at the water park entrance in a safe and timely manner. You will be assisting with putting wristbands on the visitors and possibly answering any questions they may have. This volunteer role is on an as needed basis; park staff will get in touch ahead of time to request help. The main time this role is needed is weekday mornings 9-11am and possibly weekends 1:45pm through 4/5pm. When signing up for this role, please indicate in the "notes" section if you are available for the weekday morning, weekend afternoon, or both shifts. As well as if there are any dates you already know don't work for you.

Parkeon Assistants will play a vital role in guiding visitors through the Parkeon machine process at the park entrance fee booth and directing them to appropriate parking areas, ensuring safe and efficient traffic flow during busy weekends and events. This volunteer role is most needed during the times the park host school cross-country meets and other large events. A very brief training will be given ahead of your scheduled shift on the Parkeon process.

Village Volunteers is seeking a detail-oriented volunteer to serve as our Village Historian. This role will help preserve the history and impact of our organization by organizing and archiving photographs, news articles, event materials, and other historical records. The volunteer will work with staff to ensure important milestones, stories, and accomplishments are documented for future generations. This flexible opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys organizing information, preserving community history, and celebrating the legacy of volunteerism and aging in place.

Village Volunteers is seeking community-minded volunteers to join our Emergency Preparedness Team. Working with the Team Chair, members will help develop emergency preparedness plans for Village members, volunteers, staff, and the organization; promote awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness, particularly in our coastal community; and identify, develop, and distribute resources to help older adults and community members prepare for emergencies. This volunteer opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about community resilience, planning, and helping others stay safe and informed.

Village Volunteers is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our Community Outreach Team and work under the direction of the Member/Volunteer Team Chair to increase awareness of our mission and services. Village Volunteers is seeking an organized and personable volunteer to assist our Member Services Manager with the volunteer onboarding process. Responsibilities include scheduling interviews between prospective volunteers and volunteer interviewers, monitoring the completion of background checks, coordinating volunteer orientations, and maintaining accurate records in our database throughout the onboarding process. This flexible volunteer opportunity requires no more than six hours each week and is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people and helping new volunteers get started in supporting older adults in our community.

The DCF needs people who can read and score their scholarship applications online in the month of April each year. Each reviewer will have 30 days to review about 30-35 applications for their 85+ scholarship opportunities. Training is provided in March and can take place virtually. SARC’s helpline advocates provide compassionate, confidential support to survivors of all forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Volunteers will provide crisis intervention, support, and resource referrals to callers and clients and conduct safety, suicide risk, and lethality assessments when appropriate. These advocates serve as a critical bridge between immediate crisis response and long-term healing. Through advocacy, connection, and care, volunteers help survivors access resources both within SARC and throughout the broader community, providing support at each step on their journey toward safety and healing.  

During a volunteer’s chosen on-call shift, they are responsible for responding to any helpline calls, which will be routed to their personal cell phone. Helpline advocates volunteer remotely but are expected to be in a quiet area when answering calls. 

All advocates will be asked to complete an application and interview. Volunteers do not need prior experience but are required to participate in initial training and advanced workshops. They are expected to communicate with the on-call Supervisor during their shifts and complete accurate reports in a timely manner.

We’re seeking 120 enthusiastic volunteers to support registration, course cheering, water stations, parking guidance, family activities, and start/finish line support. Wilmington State Parks welcomes volunteers who would like to help care for any of the garden beds throughout the park system.Wilmington State Parks — Brandywine, Rockford, H. Fletcher Brown, and Happy Valley parks, along with Kentmere Parkway — are home to a variety of garden beds.Some park garden beds are not just decorative; they are increasingly becoming functional spaces intended to support local ecosystems. Volunteers help to meet the needs of these garden beds and thus make a significant difference.

Rake leaves and remove branches and other debris

Pull or dig up weeds and invasive plants Prune, deadhead, or remove dead or damaged garden plants

Have high energy and like to make people smile?  You may not want to be IN the suit, but like people and can be the mascot guide and voice interacting with people. We need both roles.  Join the BBD Mascot team for parades and/or walking in parades.

Did you know that invasive plants grow aggressively, stealing the sunlight from our native plants and nutrients in the soil? 

Invasive plants disrupt local ecosystems because they lack natural predators and grow aggressively. They outcompete native flora for critical resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. This unchecked spread chokes out native plants, which in turn starves the local insects and wildlife that rely on them for food.

We have groups that meet on Fridays and Saturdays to work two hours to remove the invasive plants.  You do not need any experience.  Come help our habitat and our wildlife while meeting new people!

The Newark Arts Alliance is in need of social media assistants, as part of our Shop Committee. In this role, you will create social media posts to advertise the art in our shops. You will also work directly with the shop artists to connect and tag them in posts. Volunteers should have previous experience in creating social media posts, and should have an active social media presence.

The Newark Arts Alliance is in need of a coordinator for our gallery monitors. You will be in charge of scheduling our volunteer gallery monitors, who run the shop during open hours. You will need to communicate with volunteers regarding any changes to scheduling, as well as communicate with the Executive Director and Administrative Assistant about the needs of gallery monitoring. As a bonus, you may receive a 0% commission on work sold in the shop (between January and October) or you may receive a $25 gift card for the shop, for each month of gallery monitor coverage. Come Help the Butterflies!!

This is the time of the year that Monarch Butterflies lay eggs on milkweed and then those eggs turn into larvae and eventually become butterflies!  It is necessary for their survival that this process is monitored and documented. We ask that you plan to monitor once per week at the designated milk weed beds, ideally on the same day each week.

If you're unable to go out on your usual day, please try to monitor within 24 hours of that day.  This monitoring takes place May through September.

We provide an orientation so no experience is necessary!  Training will be June 8th at 4:30 p.m. at the Josephine Fountain across from the Brandywine Zoo.  Parking is available.

This orientation starts next week and takes about an hour.  You will be given days/times to choose from. Why are Monarch Butterflies so important? Monarch butterflies are vital ecological components that act as key pollinators for wildflowers, support biodiversity, and serve as a crucial food source for various predators. As a "flagship" or indicator species, their population decline highlights broader environmental issues, including habitat loss and pesticide overuse. They are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and, as part of the pollinator community, help support the food web. You will be given instructions on how to monitor and record your data.

Help Clear Delaware Seashore's Boardwalk!

Join fellow volunteers in keeping Delaware Seashore's South Inlet boardwalk accessible! Over time, wind blows sand onto the boardwalk which accumulates into piles that can be difficult to walk over. We will be shoveling this sand off of the boardwalk and moving it back onto the beach so that visitors can easily access and enjoy the beautiful coast!

What to Expect:
We provide all necessary supplies, including gloves, shovels, and a wheelbarrow. Expect to walk over a variety of surfaces including paved paths and sand. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.

Meeting Location:
South Inlet Day-Use Area parking lot. Park near the Big Chill and look for a state vehicle and park staff member to assist with check-in.

The State Office of Volunteerism is seeking volunteers in Sussex County to support the Building Books Across Delaware initiative, a statewide literacy and community service project in recognition of the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 and the National Day of Service.

Volunteers may assist with:

The statewide goal is to collect and distribute 3,000 books to schools across Delaware.

Donations of new or gently used books for children and youth in grades K–12 are especially encouraged.

We are also seeking community organizations, clubs, and partners interested in hosting collection bins or supporting local book drive efforts.

A Matter of Balance is the most widely implemented fall prevention program across the country.  An evidence-based, field-tested program, A Matter of Balance has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the fear of falling and increasing activity levels among older adults.  It is an easy to implement, inexpensive, and well-accepted turnkey educational program that can be employed within many community organizations and groups.

A Matter of Balance Lay Leader Coach Volunteer: Master trainers are responsible for teaching the A Matter of Balance curriculum to coaches and providing them with guidance and support as the lead the A Matter of Balance classes.  Upon certification from a master trainer, the volunteer will be responsible for implementing the A Matter of Balance sessions through lesson plans, workbook, group discussions and activities.

Volunteers have been making mats for the homeless in our nation for years. In 2019, Volunteer Delaware 50+ added the concept of using plastic bags to create mats after being introduced to the idea by a volunteer. It soon grew into a statewide program. Within this short time, Bags2Mats for the Homeless volunteers have prepared plarn, crocheted, and gifted more than 500 mats in the State of Delaware. The program operates statewide and needs volunteers to help collect plastic bags, turn the plastic material into plarn (plastic yarn, and crochet the plarn into mats.

CareWear consists of dedicated volunteers who knit, crochet, and sew year-round for some of the most vulnerable members of our communities in Delaware. Crafters of all ages create beautiful hand-made cold-weather items such as hats, scarves, mittens, quilts, and blankets, which are then distributed to children, families, and individuals via area non-profits, social service agencies, churches, hospitals, and local community organizations. More Background: Join Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids (HFHK) to "play in the dirt". We need a team of 10 to 15 people to make short work of this invigorating task.  Gloves and tools will be provided, but we can always use more. Please wear appropriate clothes and footwear. Also please bring a refillable water bottle if you have one, we will have extra water on site.

HFHK staff will demonstrate how to build the garden beds and how to fill them with soil. If you come later in the day and miss the demonstration, please find an HFHK staff member when you arrive, so we can give you instructions. PLEASE wear clothes and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty! If you are able to bring your own tools, please do.

We are most in need of the following:

1.) Power drills/drivers

2.) Wheelbarrows for moving soil

3.) Shovels

4.) Hard rakes

The more of these items we have, the faster the work will go! Please label your tools. We will have Sharpies available so you can label them when you arrive, if you haven’t already.

First Tee - Delaware uses golf as the vehicle to teach life skills and character enhancing values to kids all over Delaware.  We rely on over 100 volunteer coaches throughout the state to administer our golf and life skills programs. First Tee. We have over 20 partner golf courses and and similar number of partner youth organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs where we run our programs. No matter where you live in Delaware, there is a good chance that there is a First Tee program happening near you.

Are you interested in colonial history? Learn how hearth cooking was done in the 18th century. One Saturday a month in spring and fall, and/or help with demonstrating hearth cooking to school groups during the week. Training provided. Flexible scheduling.

Help us save the trees from being strangled by English Ivy Vines in Brandywine Park!

Many of our trees are in danger of being harmed or killed by the invasive English Ivy which is pretty to look at but deadly.  The vines climb up the trees blocking out the sun, susceptible to breaking branches, serious diseases and even death.  Removing these vines (you cut from the bottom of the tree) helps control the spread of invasive plants throughout the park and in surrounding neighborhoods.

You will need to wear long sleeved shifts and long pants, along with closed-toed shoes as you will be in the woods where there is poison ivy.  Everything will be identified to you and no experience is necessary.

The Lutheran Community Services Food Pantry at St. Stephen's (1301 N Broom St, Wilmington DE 19806) is Delaware's highest-volume pantry, serving over 1,300 families each month. But we need your help to keep it running!

Volunteer with us Wednesdays from 9 am to 10:30 am!

This is an active role that requires moving boxes of food outside and bringing them inside the building. It's a great way to get exercise and give back to the community!

Guides are needed to take visitors through the three 18th-century historic homes in Odessa. Shifts are 10-1 or 1-4pm Tuesday-Saturday, 1-4pm on Sundays. Training is provided. A friendly place to volunteer!

The Historic Odessa Foundation has a strong school problem. School guides are needed from October through May to lead the students through various programs. Training is provided. Flexible scheduling, you choose the dates you are available.

We need volunteers who would like to run a sock drive for students in need.  You can use your circle of influence-coworkers, church members, students, and community groups to participate in your sock drive to provide new socks for at-risk students (homeless, low-income, foster) in Sussex County.  You can drop off the socks with our volunteer coordinator, and we will distribute to schools with students in need.  We provide these students with new brand name sneakers but want to also gift them with new socks to wear!!  This is across all of Sussex County including below zip codes
