Opportunities From: Volunteer Delaware

Anyone who is looking to make an impact in their community can support survivors of violent crime by volunteering with SARC to provide legal advocacy during times of crisis.  Legal Assistance Response Advocates, or LARAs, provide compassionate, confidential support to survivors of all forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Our advocates assist victims in completing petitions for civil legal protection orders and accompany them to hearings.  

During a LARAs chosen on-call shift, they are expected to be available to respond to SARC offices and/or the New Castle County courthouse as needed to support survivors through the legal process, answer questions, and provide emotional support.  LARAs can assist with Protection From Abuse Orders (PFAs), Sexual Violence Protection Orders (SVPOs) and Lethal Violence Protection Orders (LVPOs).

All advocates will be asked to complete an application and interview. Volunteers do not need prior experience; training will be provided, and they will be supported on accompaniments by a 24/7 supervisor on call.   Responds to the New Castle County Courthouse Family and Superior Court departments. Opportunities soon to expand to Kent and Sussex Counties.

Anyone who is looking to make an impact in their community can support survivors of violent crime by volunteering with SARC to answer our 24/7 helpline and connect callers with needed services.

SARC’s helpline advocates provide compassionate, confidential support to survivors of all forms of sexual violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Volunteers will provide crisis intervention, support, and resource referrals to callers and clients and conduct safety, suicide risk, and lethality assessments when appropriate. These advocates serve as a critical bridge between immediate crisis response and long-term healing.

During a volunteer’s chosen on-call shift, they are responsible for responding to any helpline calls, which will be routed to their personal cell phone. Helpline advocates volunteer remotely but are expected to be in a quiet area when answering calls. 

All advocates will be asked to complete an application and interview. Volunteers do not need prior experience but are required to participate in initial training and advanced workshops. They are expected to communicate with the on-call Supervisor during their shifts and complete accurate reports in a timely manner.

Our advocates accompany survivors to medical services, offering emotional support, crisis intervention, and advocacy to ensure their needs, choices, and voices remain at the center of care.

During a SARAs chosen on-call shift, they are responsible for responding immediately to local hospital Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) units to support survivors through forensic medical exams, answer questions, and provide resources. SARAs work with hospital staff, police officers, and the patient to develop a plan for shelter, transportation, and safety.

All advocates will be asked to complete an application and interview. Volunteers do not need prior experience; training will be provided, and they will be supported on accompaniments by a 24/7 supervisor on call.

Responds to hospitals in SX County (Bayhealth Hospital​ - Dover, Milford, and Milton; ​Beebe Hospital​; TidalHealth Nanticoke)
