Wells Field needs volunteers to help battle encroaching invasive plants!

These aggressive plants steal nutrients from the soil that our native plants depend on to thrive. Our wildlife and insects will not eat the invasive plants. The invasive plants are harmful to our ecosystem and will create a monoculture if not removed/cut. These invasive plants include multiflora rose, wineberry, and Japanese honeysuckle, just to name a few.

This opportunity will be held every 2nd and 4th Sunday from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. The dates include the following:

AUG 16, 30

SEPT 13, 27

OCT 11, 25

NOV 8, 22

DEC 13, 27

Meeting Location: 13 Bristol Knoll Rd, Newark

No experience is necessary! You only have to care about our forests, fields and wildlife.  Other experienced volunteers will be there to teach you how to identify the plants for removal and how to effectively remove them.

Volunteers are recommended to wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and close-toed shoes. Please bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. Work gloves and tools will be provided.

NOTE: Ticks are active in the park and poison ivy may be present. Please use caution and do a tick check on returning home.

Volunteer at White Clay Creek State Park Today!

"De-vine Intervention" is a program to remove invasive non-native vines and other plants to benefit the native trees throughout White Clay Creek State Park. Non-native invasive vines such as Oriental bittersweet will wrap tightly and overtop trees, eventually killing them. 

Our team will help you identify these invasive plants and learn how to remove them safely.

We have removed so much of the under story that we are starting to see regrowth of some of the native American Holly, White Oak, Sassafras and other plants. The additional sunlight is also encouraging a regrowth of some non-natives so we regularly return to those areas to remove them.

When: Every Wednesday at 9:00 am until 11:00am.

Who: Suitable for individuals and for families with children 14 and over. Parent consent form required for children under 18. Parent or guardian supervision required for children under 16. This opportunity is also suitable for teams up to ten people.

Wear: Long pants, closed toed shoes, and layered clothing that can get dirty and is suitable for the weather.

Bring: Work gloves if you have them and a personal water bottle. Other tools will be provided.

Parking: Currently meeting at Carpenter Recreation Area parking lot at White Clay Creek State Park. Meet at the far end of the parking lot at Carpenter Park. 880 New London Road, Newark DE.

Volunteer at White Clay Creek State Park Today!

The Forest Restoration Team works year-round to remove a variety of invasive plants from the Judge Morris Estate site at White Clay Creek State Park. The work ranges from easy hand-pulling of small plants to removal of large shrubs and trees, to cutting and piling plant debris.  This volunteer group has been working at this site in White Clay Creek State Park for ten years to restore the forest's biodiversity and is making remarkable progress. 

There are periodic opportunities to install native species where invasive plants have been removed. This is a great way to learn more about invasive plants and the ecology of the park while helping out with a friendly group of like-minded individuals. This volunteer effort has won awards from the State of Delaware for dedication to the park and has received numerous grants to support the ongoing efforts. New volunteers are always needed and very welcome!

When: Every Thursday at 9am to 11am. 

Who: Suitable for adult volunteers and for families with children 16 and over with parent consent form and parent or guardian supervision. Suitable for groups and corporate teams.

Bring: Work gloves if you have them and a personal water bottle. Other tools will be provided.
