Odessa High School Black Student Union

Who We Are

The Black Student Union (BSU) at Appoquinimink School District is a student-led community dedicated to celebrating Black history, culture, identity, and excellence while building unity, leadership, and belonging for all students. Rooted in the African philosophy of “Ubuntu” — I am because we are — the organization creates space for students to learn, lead, serve, and grow together. Members explore history, current events, social justice, wellness, creativity, and community-building while encouraging empathy, confidence, and collaboration across cultures. More than a club, BSU is a family-centered space that promotes scholarship, self-awareness, civic engagement, and positive change. Students are encouraged to use their heads, hearts, and hands to make their school and community better while honoring the resilience, creativity, and contributions of the African diaspora.

What We Do

The OHS Black Student Union (BSU) creates opportunities for students to learn, lead, serve, and build community. We host discussions about history, identity, culture, leadership, and current events while creating a welcoming space where students feel seen, heard, and valued. Our members participate in cultural celebrations, school events, service projects, field trips, guest speaker experiences, and collaborative activities that promote unity and understanding across cultures. We also encourage student leadership through planning events, facilitating discussions, mentoring peers, and advocating for positive change within our school community. OHS BSU explores the richness of the African diaspora through music, art, literature, film, storytelling, and historical inquiry while helping students strengthen confidence, communication, empathy, and teamwork. We believe learning should engage the head, heart, hands, and harmony of a community. Most importantly, we strive to create a space rooted in joy, scholarship, service, and connection — where students can grow academically, socially, culturally, and personally while uplifting one another.
